John Poindexter

Avid Striped Bass Fisherman
Co-founder and past president of the Fresno Chapter of the California Striped Bass Association
Project manager and aquaculturist for The Fishery Foundation of California.
I've been an avid and mostly self taught fisherman since I was 8 or 9 years old. I started fishing for striped bass with my father in the early 60's in the San Francisco Delta. In the early 80's I started fishing San Luis Reservior with a friend before it became the popular fishing destination that it is today. I learned that the key to sucsess on a two million acre body of water was finding the fish. Most people look in shallow water less than 50 ft. and if they don't have any luck then they call it a day. After 24 years of fishing San Luis I have unlocked some of her secrets to success. I found that fishing deeper water (70,80,90 and as deep as 160 ft) could be as productive and sometimes more productive than shallow water fishing. As far as big fish go my biggest fish at San Luis is 22lbs, a minnow compaired to the land locked record of 68.5 lbs. However I have learned to be consistant in catching fish when most people can't.

In 2001 I submitted a proposal to the Striped Bass Advisory Committee on behalf of the California Striped Bass Association to raise striped bass in a series of floating net pens on the fore-bay at San Luis Res. I was granted funding for a pilot study and raised over 65,000 striped bass over a 3 year period. These fish were put into San Luis Res. with the exception of 10,000 which were divided and sent to Millerton Lake in Fresno and Lake Mendocino near Ukiah.

Ricky Noel Mitchell

Bio: Kayak fly-fishing guide, professional tier, freelance writer, photographer and Author, Rickey Noel Mitchell, started out closed to twenty years ago with a fly rod and float tube exploring the lakes and rivers of Central California. After a year of or more fishing reservoirs and dealing with the float tubes limitations he moved up in the water level to a pontoon boat. The pontoon boat gave him the golden opportunity to explore and fish his all time favorite watersŠrivers. However it didn¹t take long to learnŠon open waters this inflatable craft was a wind toy and it lacked speed.
From the pontoon boat, Rickey moved up in the water level once again, this time a little higher, to a craft with a history as old as fly-fishingŠthe canoe.
The canoe required learning skills, how to use a paddle, how to cast a fly rod without capsizing, most definitely skills worth learning. As a guide he found the canoe was an excellent craft for putting clients on fish, there would also be another self-discoveryŠhe enjoyed paddling as much as fly-fishing. This age old craft was everything Rickey was looking for exceptŠseaworthy.
Somewhere in the early 90¹s there was an article named Different Strokes in Outdoor Life Magazine call about an individual named Gary Sinkas. Mr. Sinkas was fishing up and the Florida Coast, catching everything from Marlins to Bull SharksŠout of a kayak.
Different Strokes inspired Rickey to buy a kayak and paddle a path to his own adventures. This was at a time when a few others were making their own self-discoveries of this age-old craft. Rickey however wanted to cast flies from a kayak. The next few years were spent experimenting with paddling techniques, rigging, and different kayaks.
After years of research and on the water experience with the four personal fishing craft and a fateful meeting with Tom Rosenbauer of Orvis, in 2007 Rickey Noel Mitchell¹s second book The Orvis Guide to Personal Fishing Craft was published.
You can also find his work; critiques and images in various magazines such as California fly Fisher, Paddler and Kayak Fisherman. Home base is Fresno California. He can be reached at www.paddleandflies.com .
A Fresno resident, Rickey teaches fly-fishing and fly-tying to students of all ages at Fresno Adult school and the summer enrichment program for children in Fresno Unified.
